Emerging and established Global Majority Artists may apply in the following disciplines: Literature, music composition, visual arts, Film, Media, & Digital Makers, and Interdisciplinary.

  • Literature: All types of writers in all writing styles are considered at BFTA.
  • Music Composition: All types of composition in all musical styles are considered at BFTA from hip hop to classical, and from post-modern jazz to electronica.
  • Visual Arts: In this wide-ranging discipline, creators of three-dimensional and two-dimensional art – photographers and printmakers to sculptors and creators of large-scale installation as well as everything in between – are considered.
  • Film, Media, & Digital Makers: All media types accepted including documentary, narrative, experimental, long, short, etc.
  • Interdisciplinary: Interdisciplinary - including performance, dance, installation, and experiential.

Application Periods & Deadlines

Applications are accepted from January 15th to March 15th, 11:59 PM EST. Artists may apply only once every 24 months. BFTA will only accept applications for the upcoming deadline.

Before starting the application process, we encourage applicants to scroll through our extensive list of Application FAQs. All applicants apply through the online application process. There is no charge for a fellowship, but there is a fee to apply ($15 - $17). To apply, click on the relevant “Apply now” button below.
